Farmhouse With a Tad Traditional

Two years after moving into her split level home our client decided that her kitchen, where a stay at home mom spends most of her days, needed a tune-up. Originally loving her large semi-circle shaped island it turned out to be not her style. In addition, the floor, countertop, and sink were wearing quickly. We met with her by appointment in her search for quality products to turn her Golden Oak kitchen into a Traditional Farmhouse kitchen.

Anytime by Appointment

Within minutes of browsing our design studio, she fell in love with our displayed Calacatta quartz countertop. This was the foundation of our design that influenced the rest of the decisions. She originally wanted white for her new rectangle island base for contrast to her golden oak cabinets but Jayde being an experienced father of 3 warned that may be a lot of maintenance. Jayde and Liz suggested a darker stain and the client had her heart set on knotty oak. Upon bringing samples to her home she decided on the stain “Dark Roast”.

While in the studio, a tile in our shower display also caught our client’s eye. The tile, Chicago brick replica, was just what the client couldn’t put her finger on to give her the cozy farmhouse feel she was looking for in a backsplash. She splurged and instructed she wanted the tile to follow the pantry walls up to the ceiling. This really changed the look of the kitchen and turned out to be the main focal point when you come up the stairs from the foyer.

 

Rewind to the Countertop

With the Calacatta quartz leading the design it wasn’t a second thought until the budget got in her way. To accommodate her a couple more meetings took place to get her budget where she wanted. Jayde suggested doing a contrasting or identical laminate for the perimeter countertop (against the walls) only. This way the cost would be cut while also keeping the island top in the original quartz that she fell in love with. With the brick being such a stand out contrast the way it was she decided to keep the tops identical and chose our Calacatta laminate with the same bullnose edge. Unfortunately, this meant that we couldn’t do her farmhouse style (apron) sink as laminate doesn’t have the resiliency for an under-mount. Instead, she chose a white composite drop-in sink with a standout faucet that blends beautifully. Crisis averted!

The Last Piece

Finally, the floor. She knew she needed a durable vinyl and upon a few trips back and forth with samples she decided on a rustic wood replica, Salvaged Redwood, in our Karndean luxury vinyl collection. It is almost an identical shade to the island base although flooring has lighter variations to blend with the existing cabinetry.

 

The client opted to use our partner JTE Solutions to make this project come to life.
